Experience from the Delivery Desk – Part 1
Three Perspectives. One Mission: Better Project Delivery
Delivery Insight
Approval does not necessarily mean Stakeholder Commitment.
In one of our projects, the user interface evolved through multiple discussions. Different stakeholders shared reference screens, suggested improvements, and contributed ideas from their individual perspectives. The final UI was approved, but it gradually became a collection of good ideas borrowed from multiple reference points rather than a single, well-defined vision.
What was missing was collective ownership.
The coordination effort remained focused on accommodating all individual suggestions, rather than taking periodic reviews from senior management as a holistic user experience.
The project was delivered successfully. The functionality met every agreed requirement. Each stakeholder was satisfied with the functional outcome.
Yet, the response to the UI was mixed.
Different stakeholders viewed the same interface through different lenses. Some appreciated specific features, while others questioned the overall user experience. Although individual screens had been reviewed and approved, the application had never been evaluated as one complete journey.
That experience changed the way I approach UI reviews.
A user interface is not a collection of screens—it is a complete user experience. Individual approvals are valuable, but they cannot replace stakeholder commitment to a shared vision of the final product.
Today, before signing off any UI, I ask one simple question:
Are you approving individual screens, or are you committing to the complete end-user experience?
Approval validates individual screens. Stakeholder Commitment validates the complete user experience.
This single question has helped me conduct better reviews and set clearer expectations.
Have you encountered a project where every stakeholder approved the solution, yet the final outcome still attracted conflicting feedback?
