We were in the middle of a project where development was progressing as planned. The client-side Project Consultant was highly communicative, proactive, and closely involved in the weekly review meetings. Both teams shared the same objective—deliver a successful project.

During one of these review meetings, a seemingly simple request was raised.

“Can we maintain a few additional statuses for better communication?”

It sounded reasonable. The intent was good, and in the flow of the discussion, our team agreed without hesitation.

Only later did we realize the true impact of that decision.

Those additional statuses were not just new values in a database. They affected the workflow, triggered nearly twenty additional email communications, required changes across multiple screens, and significantly expanded the testing effort.

What appeared to be a small enhancement consumed nearly ten additional development days.

The lesson was not that the request was unnecessary. In fact, it improved communication within the application.

The real lesson was that every change has a delivery impact, irrespective of how small it appears during a meeting.

Since then, I have made it a practice to pause before accepting any change request and ask one simple question:

“Have we evaluated the impact on development, testing, communication, and delivery timelines?”

That brief conversation has helped us make better decisions—not by saying “No” to change, but by understanding its true cost before saying “Yes.”
